General Fusion Achieves Plasma Heating Milestone with LM26 Machine
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. General Fusion Inc. has reported significant technical progress toward its commercial fusion energy goals. The company confirmed that its large-scale Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) machine, Lawson Machine 26 (LM26), has successfully achieved plasma heating to electron temperatures of approximately 8.4 million degrees Celsius, or 0.72 keV.
This achievement represents a substantial validation of the operational principles behind the company's unique approach to fusion energy. By utilizing mechanical compression with a lithium liner, General Fusion demonstrated that the plasma can be heated effectively. The company is now focused on its next targeted milestone of reaching 1 keV electron temperature.
Key Technical Highlights:
- Electron temperature reached approximately 8.4 million degrees Celsius (0.72 keV).
- Mechanical compression achieved a more than 3-fold increase in electron temperature.
- Observed significant increases in plasma density and poloidal magnetic field, both reaching 10 times their starting values.
- Confirmed plasma stability deep into the compression phase with no significant contamination from the lithium liner.
- Recorded an increase in neutron yield during the compression process.
The company also provided an update on its proposed business combination with Spring Valley Acquisition Corp. III. The registration statement has been declared effective, and an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders is scheduled for July 6, 2026, to vote on the transaction. Upon closing, the combined entity is expected to trade on Nasdaq under the ticker symbols GFUZ and GFUZW.
